make up or get your hands on a led light and probe the amp for signal.
Hi all,
Asking for a bit of advice...
Today I changed the plugs in my 92 3.5 V8i Disco 1 - the old girl had been running a bit rough and thought she needed a bit of TLC. Anyway when I cranked her over no vrmm vrmm.(She hadn't been started for a week or two as I have a new(er) Disco - I wish I'd tried starting her prior to changing the plugs but didn't!)
Called the NMRA and the guy checked her over, assured me that my changing the plugs was NOT the cause of the problem, and the diagnosis was no spark getting to the dizzy - send her to the auto electrician. Now I'm hoping to sell this one so don't particularly want to spend too much on her prior to offloading her, though obviously she's worth a bit more going than not!
Anyway I guess that the ignition amplifier or coil could be the problem. Is there anyway to check this - I have a 97 3.9 V8 Disco sitting nearby - if I take the coil off this and try it on the 3.5 will it work? Or will I run the risk of stuffing this coil or something too? By the way the coil on the 3.9 is a Bosch (A bit dark for further ID). Taking the coil off the other car will be no biggy as I need to move it to fit the second battery anyway.
Thanks

I think this is what the NMRA guy did - he also put had some sort of 'magic box' that he connected to the dizzy where the high tension lead from the coil normaslly goes.
Sorry for being a n00b but please could you be a touch more specific on the 'probing the amp for signal bit' - I'm not really sure what I should look for - or what to do if there is/isn't a signal![]()
sure, a LED test light is a very sensitive (compared to a test lamp) probe testing tool, what its used for is looking for voltages on EFI and electronic ignition components with out the risk of overloading them.
probing the amp is just a case of testing all the connections on the amp module while someone keys the engine over to see where voltages are turning up and if they seem to be doing the right thing, This will help identify the problem, If you cant get any signs of life at the amp it could be a dead fuse stopping power from reaching the amp, if the LED light indicates everything is playing the game then it may just be the connection to the coil is knackered.

If you need a new amp I made a cost effective alternative to the Lucas amp and coil. Your sparky might be able to build this cheaply if you need it.
