95 build would be a D1?
hey guys, how are you going?
i've been trolling the forums for a few months so far, lots of good info to be had.
i've just done a search, and for the love of me, i couldnt find my situation with the search terms that i was using. so here goes:
car: 1995 build disco 2 3.9L V8 auto
mileage: ~230,500km's
mods: none, all OEM parts replaced
upkeep: just had a 230,000km service
issue: no driveability issues, vehicle starts fine, accelerates as-per-usual , etc etc, but there has been an unusual whine/ vacuum cleaner sound develop. tonight, for the very first time since i've driven the car [had it in the family since new], there was a high pitched, but rather subtle whistle/ whine/ vacuum cleaner sound, that made itself apparent upon cold start up, disappeared when loaded, but then repeated itself during idle/ deceleration when in "D".
my old man reckons it's not mechanical, and from what i've read here the closest thing that it could be might be the transfer cover, but im not sure if im even in the right ball park with this one. the sound seems to be coming from under the passenger cabin.
sorry if my post was vague, but thanks for taking the time to read over it, and any help would be appreciated- just want to keep the old girl going as smoothly as possible, forever
cheers,
scotty

Whistle... Exhaust leak at manifold not uncommon...
Or vacuum leak.....
And yes, a 1995 is a D1... No D2 until 1999 in Oz.
as Tombie said,,
whistles that vary are mostly exhausts,,
you wont hear a vacuum leak,,
(where are you Simon?)
have you listened with the windows down?

I vote for an inlet manifold vacuum leak. Idle the engine with the bonnet up, use a piece of plastic hose as a one-ear stethoscope and pinpoint the whistle.
hey guys,
thanks heaps for the quality info- gonna get a rubber hose stethoscope and try to pinpoint the location.
it'd be interesting to see if it is either the exhaust mani/ intake mani, get it fixed and keep her going smooth
thanks again guys- i'll update this thread when i've zeroed in on the noise.
cheers!
