Hard to start TDI 300 Disco

    Hi gurus,

My 300 TDi Disco is becoming increasingly hard to start of a morning, all most drains the battery before it will fire. Has progressively gotten worse over a couple of months. When its does start it belches a huge amount of black-grey smoke. It starts first turn of the key in the afternoons or any time during the day, but leave it sit for more that 12 hours its very hard to start. Thinking glow plugs, injectors ? any advice greatly appreciated.

Gday, there was a similar thread last week or so, few people including me have the same problem. I have new injectors and glow plugs to no avail.

What he said, new battery= easy start, old battery= harder starts especially when its cold,
have just replaced mine again got 4 years out of the last one, but it too was doing what yours is doing.

the smoke on startup is typical disco 300tdi , thats how you know everything is working fine, fuel.injectors injector pump etc.

    See, I don't understand this.

I have 1200cca to work with (i.e. 1 x 550 and 1 x 650cca). Batteries are less than two years old. SURELY that's enough grunt.

Yet, the old girl starts like a pig on cold mornings.

Cleaning terminals and earth straps before I shell out any hard earned I think.

    Interesting thread(s).

    Will advise.

I reckon its a combination of tappet clearance and pump timing as i dont have any problem starting mine with a 2 yo 670cca main battery, and although it should make no difference at all but since fitting a new alt it seems have had a power injection.

    Hi,

Is it taking several turnovers to start or is it not turning over at all until it does turnover and start straight away?

I mean do you turn the key and it sits there for 1 to 2 seconds with nothing happening then fires or is it taking 6 or more turns to fire?
