Bill, where are you located? The most common cause is excessive air gaps and/ or faulty wheel sensors. It is important that it is diagnosed correctly and not a ' replace everything until it's fixed' mentality. If you can let us know where you are we can point you in the right direction of someone knowledgeable.

    Bill,

If it IS a wheel sensor fault, then I would get it seen to ASAP, as with a D1 ABS system, a faulty sensor can reduce braking performance dangerously, wost case it can prevent the vehicle stopping by continued pulsing of the pedal as if a wheel has locked. It can have unpleasant consequences. I'm not sure who is out your way, have a look in 'members with diagnostic equipment' section, you'll need access to a T4, Rovacom, Autologic or similar to accurately diagnose and repair.
While the vehicle is in this condition it could be deemed unroadworthy too, so insurance would be void in the event of a claim.

Just at a guess but try call LRA (Les Richmond Automotive) in Thomastown for your closest as your local that i Know of. If you need to call someone try Glen at Roverland.

I've had the same issue for a while and going to throw my 2 cents in on the matter.

My ABS light shows up sporadically, mostly whenever I jolt over a severe enough bump in the road. At first I was alarmed, but quickly forgot to give a damn tbh. The ABS works perfectly fine and is obviously a small gremlin with a sensor giving a false indication (it clags up with grit). I have a '96 D1 and can stamp on the brake pedal with utter confidence, even outdoing my 2006 Jeep with ABS for stopping power. Even my housemate who has an '08 Navara reckons it'd pull up quicker and truer than his rig.

This is a common issue with D1's, so I wouldn't be too fussed unless there is obviously no ABS...which you'd be able to tell straight away.

it is possible to read the stored abs fault codes on disco 1 just using the old type flash codes. i will try to find the procedure in my old paper work but someone on here must know it off by heart and can post it quicker.

Hi Bill first thing i would check is for loose front wheel bearings and pull the 5 amp abs fuse out .
D1 's with a ABS fault can be dangerous the ABS can fail when you hit 15kmh and you wont be able to stop hope this helps cheers Greg (Outcast Offroad)

    Well, heres my two cents,,

My lights been on for the last few years,, and I must say, I've never felt good about it. At first I was told it was just the switch at the foot pedal, but then earlier this year it started to do some strange things. I've since removed the fuse to ensure the system does'nt work, but then,, neither do the brakes work that well either, IMHO.
Glen told me on inspection that theres more to it than "just the sensors" etc,,
The car had beautiful brakes when I first got it, and I'm looking forward to having them again. They've never "not" stopped me,, but your always left wondering. Is it worth it?? especially if you've got family on board??,,
