Mate for years I always looked at Land Rovers and secretly lusted after them but was scared off by all the horror stories. Finally bit the bullet and grabbed an auto 97 disco TDi and bloody glad that I did. Plus the fiance loves it.Quote:

I too heard all the scary stories but I to like Earvin I bit the bullet and purchased a 97tdi Auto, same price as the 97td5 at the time but I wanted a simple car to work on and i got it, and love it, 8.2L pr 100k hway and 9.2 round a country town where I live (Bowen), if you are not in a hurry and you want economy plus simple to work and you dont mind some engine noise then the tdi is the pic but if you want power and a bit of quietnes in the cabin it comes at a price plus there is more to go wrong and much dearer at the work shop.
Finally, make sure the disco you purchase has a service history.

I've got a 200tdi and I love it. I'm sad at the moment because it doesn't go but when it does I get about 9 - 10 to the 100 and I'm happy with that.

i've got a 98tdi & gas.. get 14-1500 out of my tanks (gas 30L, d 110L) power.. well i cant say i get left behind at lights to often.. and i do drive like a maniac sometimes.. parts for a 98 landy are not much harder to find than those ugly patrols/lc just got to know where to look...
the best bit about it... less than 10k for it.. compare that to patrol/lc

I started off looking at landy's then somehow got myself talked out of it, went through the cruiser and patrol models but they were all more expensive by at least $7k for anything decent. Saw the light and picked up what I got now. No regrets only dreams and empty pockets

They can but why?
Speed limit is well below that and wind noise is like a brick on wheels.
What ever you decide to do, is check it out with a Landy mechanic.
There are a few good ones in the market section here right now.

Trip up to Darwin a few years ago before they changed the speed limit to 130km/h, I comfortably sat on 140-150km/h between Alice Springs and 3-ways(Near tennant Creek). The faster it goes above 100km/h the better it sits on the road. Fuel economy? Forget it! averaged about 13.5L/100kms.
120km/h you could get it down to approx 11L/100kms. Like somone else said, Why would you? I prefer a good balace between economy/speed. Don't forget they have the aerodynamics of a Brick. Not as bad as a Defender, but close.:)
