I had a noise that I thought was the water pump, turned out to be the PAS pump pulley was loose, this caused it to run out of balance and made a squeal. Also check the belt tensioner, if the bearing is shot it can squeal or cause the belt to run out and make a noise also

drop the laccy bands off of the front and give it a quick run up and see if that stops it.

if that stops it it something belt driven so reach in there and play with all the pullys and see which ones are wrong

As Blackie said, remove the drive belt and run it again.
If it is still there, could maybe be the timing chain rubbing.
When I fitted a rollmaster double chain, I found it rubbed on the timing case cover. I had to grind off a casting near the Dizzy input hole on the case, It also rubbed on the oil pump cover, it does have a metal ring to it on the clip

Does sound like a vacuum leak to me, mist some water around the inlet manifold and plenum joins. A piece of garden hose as a stethoscope will help pinpoint the noise.

you need to do 2 more tests ..

    1. drop the belt and check it again, if it stops then its a bearing running out of lube or the alternator slip rings running dry contacts. (best guess without running the stethescope over it.

    2. if its apparent with the engine running stall stop the engine (put it in drive and turn it off for an auto put it in a tall gear ride the clutch then turn it off or dump the clutch)

if the noise persists for a fraction after the crank stops then its a vac leak somewhere start ya bastard and a tube-o-scope are your friends to find it.

if it stops with the engine then its something on or in the block and the last squeeling noise I heard like that one was a dry thrust washer that was galling up the ally it was ment to be protecting.

Mathew, that is the water pump seal squealing. Remove the main belt and rotate the pump pulley by hand, you'll be able to duplicate it. Don't forget the water pump rotates anticlockwise on the serpentine belt engine.
The pump should be replaced as it will soon suffer a bearing failure. In fact when the squealing STOPS is when you have to worry

Matthew, get the belt off when it is hot/doing it, and rotate the pulley briskly in the direction of rotation, I reckon you'll be able to reproduce the sound.
If it IS the pump seal squealing, then a new pump is easily found through BMI, Rovacraft, British4x4, Karcraft etc etc. Get a genuine/OE one, NOT aftermarket/cheaper. you do not want the fan going into the rad at a later stage....
