Cost of New Head replacement in 97 TDI SE?

Hi, after 6 weeks and $3000 of service, timing belt, powerstearing leaks, fuel pump rebuild thinking all was good we then found we had to put 3 + 1/2 litres of coolant in over the weekend with no sign of leak. Apparently there's a crack in the head and its $3000 to replace. Does this sound right. Does anyone know of a cheaper new one or have a second hand one? Thanks.

Helen, I had the cylinder head replaced on my '97 300tdi just last week due to the usual leaking head gasket then overheat scenario. I bought a new one (complete - eg valves fitted, etc) from Triumph Rover Spares in Adelaide (they're on the web) for about $1200. Cost another $350 or so for the head replacement gasket set and new cylinder head bolts. TRS also sometimes have reco'd heads but they're only a couple of hundred cheaper. Unfortunately, if the quote you have for $3000 includes labour and parts, then it sounds about right (actually less than I paid).

I would have offered you my old one for nothing but I left it with the mechanic in Coober Pedy (I was on my way home from holidays at the time). He was initially going to send it off for testing and straightening but cost of freight plus an extra week's accomodation etc meant it was better just to purchase a new one.

    Good luck...

    Cheers

I would go through turner. Cost me 1000 for head ,gaskets, new valves and head bolts. Plus I also got two new injectors and thermostat. Very good to deal with and good prices.
