Squeaky Steering D1
Finally got tired of the low pitched rubbing sound when steering to reverse out of the driveway etc. Took off the steering wheel expecting to find a bit of plastic rubbing somewhere, but there was no evidence of that - even though it sounded like it was in behind the wheel. After looking a bit harder, and sticking my head in the footwell, it seemed to be coming from close to the firewall. Took off the black trim, and found the noise was being made by the steering column rubbing against the rubber boot inside the mount point - so I prized the lip of the boot up with a screwdriver and applied some petroleum jelly (or whatever else you are supposed to use). No more noise - sometimes its nice to fix something for free.

Fwiw there was a LR fix for this where a PVC sleeve was slipped over the column & through the firewall after removing the uni joint assy.
This was liberally greased inside of the PVC pipe, & because it was split along its length, stayed firm on the column.
The cause was the column rubbing on the firewall grommet as it turned. It may be ok for a while using CRC but you can be sure it will return.

I'm just about to go looking for this noise on mine, so this might just save me some time.
Thanks,
Daryl.

I did have the LR Service Bulletin for a few years, but not sure where it is now. It may even be on the RAVE CD, but not sure.

Update:
If you can get hold of LR Bulletin 57/04/95/EN Dated 01/11/95 (yes, the problem was known back then
) then it will give you all the details for the fix. I can only find P2 of 2 & P1 is missing. This starts at point 8 & goes to 19 but it does give the method, albeit without dwgs of the PVC sleeve.
If anyone thinks this may help them please PM with an E-mail address as I have now scanned it so as not to lose it.

It has something to do with the colum and a little plastic spacer\locking bush
If you pull on the steering wheel the noise will go away until you push on the steering wheel again
