Thread: sway bar disconnects

hey all, My mod'd D1 loves to drag its door handles when cornering on road Doesn't bother me a great deal but was wondering if anyone out there has custom made sway bar - disconects for a D1? Haven't really been able to come up with something that is strong yet quick and easy to disconnect/reconnect offroad. and tucks away out of harms way when not in use. Any pics or ideas would be greatly appreciated - adam

BUT the rear bar hardly does anything but balance the car, and if you have stronger springs it will be tail happy.
The front bar does all the work, and there is very little room there to do anything.
There is a thread about this a few months ago. The best I could come up with was to cut of the nyloc part of the nut and put a pin through. But the link and bar depend on the top bush tension to remain in position and not interfere with the axle or chassis .
I reckon the best you could do is get a tie rod end with the same taper as the lower seat, machine the shaft down and drill out the cast shaft of a standard link to fit , then put a pin through to hold it.
I haven't had the energy to do it yet as I have had teh othe rmod for about 5 years and never been bothered .

hay guy's i'm interested in doing the same to my d1 i found a web site aedofab off road fabrications they do sway bar disconnects and also double cardon driveshafts or multiple double cardon driveshafts if anybody is interested in them.

Thi was posted on the last thread, and I still disagree.
That is because the bushes need to be under tension to hold the link at 90 degrees to the top bolt/bracket.
I can see the sway bar and link fouling the diff housing or the chassis with only a bit of sideways movement, and I can tell you your insurance company would not be impressed.
The only way I can see it working safely is to have a shaft that can come apart, and that is hard because they are so short. It would be difficult to have a Jeep type setup with an inner and outer sleeve butIMHO it is the only way to be safe on road.

No sway bars seems to be going ok for me. I'm sure it would be better with them but it's survivable.
