If they did, the rest of the car's body panels would look out of place. The creases in the doors etc are different

it can be done, theres an article in the March 2010 issue of Landrover Owner International where a D1 has the D2a upgrade headlights and grill fitted.

the article doesnt have much nitty gritty on how it was done but it looks like they have used D2a headlights, grill and bonnet with modified D1 front guards.

try and find a copy, it has pics and a bit of a write up.
