    help with auto gearbox linkage. cant get out of drive therefore cant start the car

    i have a 97 disco

    i got home from shopping today and reversed up the driveway, when i put it into drive from reverse it got stuck and now all i can select is 3, 4 it will not budge into any other gear.

    i think i have norrowed the problem down to the linkage in the gear handel. the breaklights work so i dont think its the break light switch which i have read can cause a similar problem.
    any help and advice on getting apart the linkage or what it cold bewould be greatly appreciated.

    Check the linkage down at the gearbox. Thats where the adjustment is.

    It sounds like the circlip which holds the internal linkage for the button on the side of the shifter has popped off.
    Carefully lever the top centre section out of the shifter with a small screwdriver or similar and you can see where it is supposed to go.

    thanks guys i only wish i came online to read this before i ripped the center console out thismorning haha i found it was just the circlip so all is fixed now cheers all again
