I don't want to sound like a nerd but... I like em skinny. I run 235/85R16's and love them. You get the height without all the cutting. I have a (sagged) 2" lift, a small trim of the rear guard (camel cut) and had to reshape the little metal inner guard thing directly behind the back wheels.
They also tend to be cheaper than the big wide things as well. I like V8Landy's 32x9.5's only they are not very common.
    Cheers,
    Pete

    Nothing Nerdy about that.
The macho big wheels thing has long been proven wrong.
You ever see army vehicles or true hunters and people living in the outback running monster truck wheels. No.

245 is the widest I will ever go, my fav ourite is 225's actually and the steering is nice and light, less strain on drive train and you can get spares in most places.

I always air down and only in sand have I ever been dissappointed.

This is the advice I was given from a host of farmers, roo shoters and others that do big Km's out in the middle of nowhere. I almost went with a set of 7.50R16's for my last set but I'm sure the onroad handling would have suffered... and I would have looked like my Grandfather.
The best part is that they fit without chopping up the car! You get the same height as a 32" tyre but they tuck in when flexing. As a bonus, I got them in the new KM2 version of BFG's mud terrain for $220 each.
If anyone is wondering if the KM2's are any good... buy em, they are great! And you can't hear them. An excellent touring/mud/sand/rocks/everything tyre, IMO.
    Cheers,
    Pete

I got 235/85R16. I was very lucky to get them at that price. It was a mate of a mate and I think they were ordered by accident and didn't sell because everyone wants big fat ones. Lucky me!

I have been wondering what tyres to get once the Coopers wear out, mainly the size.

I have had my thoughts confirmed about bigger tyres, considering the driving I do and where I go and intend to go 4WDing, the standard size tyre is most practical, though the 85 series profile that PM80 has just bought was my next move to look into, cheaper way to gain a bit more clearence!

the disco's, especially the diesels dont like it when you put to big of a size tyre on them, knocks the gearing around and takes the puff out of them at a hundred on hills. I put the 4.11:1 diff gears in mine to counteract this.

I was running the equivalent of 30in tyres on mine, when i put my 31in muddies on for off road play it used to run out of puff on the highway up hills. Only problem is the 4.11:1 diff gears are best suited to 33's, 32's are ok but the engine revs a bit high on flat roads. Its good around lithgow and bathurst because of the hills but if i did alot of freeway driving or lived out on the flats i'd run 33's.

Most of my driving is done to and from work along the highway and around town here and there, so the std tyres are perfect, though having the bigger tyres would knock the revs down a bit along the hwy .... etc
Just wouldn't mind a chunkier set of tyres for some mud/climbing adventures and also to gain some more clearence, Without going to extremes, the disco seems to have quite a bit of clearence for the use I'd put it through as it is ... But I guess, as usual, we all just want that extra inch!

im looking at new rubber too ive got 245 70 R16 bridgestone duelers AT at the moment and im probably gona go skinny too as im in kal we got all sorts of terrain out here sand mud and rocks and i want to get down the beach too and when you go skinny and deflate it gives you a better footprint as it lengthens like you wouldn't believe 4x4 action did a test a few years ago and going longer is (usually) better as your reaching in front and behind where you have already been and know the ground is good where as sideways may still spread your vehicle weight out but is only going to put your rubber out onto more of what your already sitting and possibly not better ground.

I just fitted 235/85 16' maxxis bighorns for $220 each. i only had to slightly cut the folded edges at the back of the rear wheel arches, and slightly adjust one steering stop. when they first went on i thaught i would have a heap of trouble up front because they look tight in the wheel arches, but no problems yet. I also have an arb bullbar, so i cant comment on how they would go clearing a normal bumper.
    Hope that helps.
Good value for money tyre i recon
