    Overheating Problem

    My 98 V8Disco has started developing an overheating problem.

    Everyday running temp is fine there is no sign of a problem until either a decent hill climb or the aircon is turned on. General or highway driving temp is normal, no matter what the distance.

    Thermostat was replaced about 2mth ago, waterpump about 8mths.

    Question I have is when squeezing top radiator hose when engine is cold or has cooled there is definite movement of coolant in expansion tank, does this indicate flow through the radiator is good or that thermostat is stuck open

    Good flow of coolant comes out of the radiator plug hole.

    Top radiator hose rarely seems pressurized and a hissing sound can be heard most times at the stat cover after engine is turned off.

    Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    I'd open with your radiator needs flushing out and some loving.

    movement of the coolant in the expansion tank when you squeeze the top or bottom hose doesnt indicate much other than the the cooling system has bled up more or less correctly.

    check the temp of the top and bottom hoses if the bottom one is cooler thant the top one by a significant amount with the engine warmed up and running then you are looking at a flow restriction somewhere.

    As well as checking the radiator for blockages, take a look at the viscous coupling on the fan to see if it is engaging properly when hot.

    Also check out the expansion tank cap to see if it is holding pressure; the hissing could be coming from there.

    Picked up some flush treatment today I will use on the weekend and see if makes a difference.

    Coupling and cap are fine.

    Hissing is definitely coming from stat area.

    Sounds like you might have an air lock in the heater core. When the car is warmed up turn the heater on hot and bleed out the radiator plug.
    Found that worked with a VW that had a heating problem that we had in the work shop the other week.
