    Exhaust

Had to drop the rear section of the exhaust on my 300TDi to weld up a seam split so took the opportunity to remove the centre muffler and replace with pipe. My car has had the particulate filter and rusty rear box removed previously.
Now that was a mistake as it sounded like it had no exhaust system and was sure to attract the attention of those you do not attention from. So round the corner to a mates who had a few old mufflers lying around. He gave me a straight through bullet silencer from a Subaru that was the same pipe size. I welded that in and it is amazing the difference. It still sounds like it has a purpose but not distractingly so.
Will have to wait a fortnight till I drive upto Auckland and back to see how it goes.

last week i dropped the centre muffler off my 300 TDi and it didn't make much difference in the amount of noise it put out, but i have noticed a difference in how far down the right pedal goes (less) for the same amount of power. jury is still out on the fuel consuption

But do you still have the rear muffler, if so try removing that then listen to the difference

One mate here was descending in reverse after a failed try to overpass a step hill, the exhaust pipe from his Disco pricked the grass and, during the seconds we intended to save it, the exhaust pressure made it to explode. The muffler was opened in one longitudinal welding joint, and a lot of white pulp came out.
My friend has replaced this rear muffler with only a continuous pipe and the noise is just as before.
I think the centre muffler is the main silencer.

    Regards

The rear "muffler" is there to stop the resonant sound when the engine is putting out full power. Put a car trailer on with a car on it and you will hear a sound inside like an F111 when you start going uphill. I was nearly deaf after 4hrs. It was ok without the trailer but the exhaust is now back to standard.
