So, with my auto. should I manual shift to suit conditions or let the gearbox do it's work and just floor it?

nope let the auto do the work with the following exceptions.
1. downhill. manually kick it down to one gear lower than it would select to climb the hill in the given load/condtions
2. towing. lock it out of top cog Prior to doing any hill climbs or if you face a heavy head wind
3. Hunting, If its having a hard time choosing between a low gear locked up or a taller gear unlocked lock it into the lower gear and back of the pedal a touch.
you can trick the auto into manual shifting if you have the throttle input cable set right by modulating the throttle pressure to get it to change up and then winding the power on, but it takes skill and a lot of practice to make it happen well. Getting this trick right is will get you reasonable speed and decent economy.
mines about the same but im not 100% with mine as the speedo is out because of the tyres.
But if you are getting anything around 10L/100km thats about average, i have gotten into the 8's on a long trip babying it.
Yeah, around 9-10 for my standard 300tdi and about 1 l/100km higher if towing the camper trailer.
Definitely a good idea to go down to third manually for steep hills to keep it in the rev range.
Its really excellent for what it is.
It's easy to calculate the correct distance reading according to the size of you tyres.
Divide the new outside tyre diameter by the old which gives you a multiplication factor. Every time you finish a tank of fuel, multiply your distance reading by the number you calculated to work out the actual distance you travelled. Easy!
just use a GPS for your speedo. At speed there very accurate

Just use a stopwatch and calculator.
Time over any distance (use road side markers)
Take the distance in meters divide by time in seconds x 3.6 = speed.
eg. 3000m d 104.55sec x3.6 = 103.29 km/h.
As used by some police, time over distance.

my 95 300tdi get between 8.5 and 9.5 l/100kms between city driving and trips.
i had dgas on a hilux surf before the landy and had nothing but trouble with it. though it did give a bit more power and ecomony, the car needs to be set up on a dynamo for decent noticible results. never had alot of confidence in it but the then the people who fitted it in west aust didnt fill up my coolant after cutting in to the lines and my head gasket went a day later. though after spedning three grand to fix the head, the car was writen off about a fortnight later:mad: thoug it did mean getting a disco!
