    stuck on crank pulley

    Hey guys....

Job is to replace timing belt, idler and tensioner...
but I'm still stuck on the bloody crank pulley bolt.

It is manual, but the head is off so I can't exactly do the "keep it in gear trick"
Tried to make my own little holding gadget, but whichever way I tried the bolts seem to not be strong enough to withstand the force needed to undo the bolt (...locktite...?).

Anybody got any more tips or tricks?
Otherwise I guess I have to work half-half-backwards and put the head on first (was gonna keep it off for better access etc until timing is done...)

    Cheers,

    S

if the head is off there is no reason why you cant do the keep it in gear trick.

put it in 4th high CDL in chock the wheels have someone stand on the brakes then have at it with the breaker bar.

Having the head off just stops you from doing the "fill cylinder X with oil) routine.

When I did my V8 ( but I take it yours is TD1?) the crank shaft bolt was locked solid. I put the correct size socket on it and used a breaker bar wedged on to the ground below , and cranked the engine for a sec. ( doesn't need the head on if the starter motor is still in place) the power of the crank undid my tight crankshaft bolt.

Another method is to wedge a long breaker bar under the steering box and flick the ignition key...

I have a bad feeling about cranking it without oil (as mentioned the sump is off too).... anybody positive it definitely wont harm the engine?
but it might be the last option...

have put it in gear, locked the diff, tried 1st and 4th high and low range - nothing. The engine positively still spins (dumb look: its not a left hand thread on the bolt, is it....................??)

so far done about 60 degree turn - made a little holding tool, but I'm afraid the bolts don't hold it ....

    what to do.......??

PS: also had the rattle gun at it.... just rattles away

that is supposed to mean with the diff locked etc the crank pulley turned about 60 degrees anti clockwise with the motion of the socket trying to open the bolt, but not cracking it....

its been a looooong saturday and without any success so far

You WON"T hurt it cranking briefly with no oil pressure, unlike a modern Micro tolerance crank IE Toyota HZ, 1HDT etc etc.,

I Might add, if you can't get it off with a big breaker bar and you are slipping the clutch, then it may be welded on... Don't larf, I have seen it done

If you have a propane torch or similar, heat up the crank bolt gently, allowing the heat to travel along to the threaded section, if they have used loctite then it will relax with heat,.

thats normal while its taking up the slack of the drive line the engine will (in the very worst vehicles) take upto 3/4 of a turn to lock everything up. do it in low range and it can take a couple of turns.
