Thread: Replacing Rear Panel on Discovery 1

Have a look in thr Rave,CD, it has a body section that shows all parts that can be taken apart.

A couple of years ago I helped a friend to take this part out.
To take it apart is necessary to dismantle rear mudflap, interior rear plastic trim, the window, The rear lamp, a couple of Phillips screws inside the tail door frame, the black plastic "C" pillar is fixed with screws from inside as well as the panel.
Finally there is a body sealant cord inmediatly below the rain rail, you should cut it logitudinally with a cutting tool.
Just pull the whole panel out and down...

neighbour ran into the back of my disco the other day with the fin on his outboard motor, put a nice sized dent in the panel along with a fair sized cut. The panel beaters i have been to for a quote say its all bolt on and simple (for them at least) but the sealant inside is important to get right otherwise it is a b*tch.

Anyway here is what to do.
OOOPS!!!!, sorry this was the 3 door disco, the 5 door is slighlty different, but it will show that it can be dove.
Just get the Rave and it'll show it

I need to do something similar on the disco, but the dent in mine is on the curved panel that the tail light fits into, fortunately I did not damage the door or the rear panel.

Would appreciate some step by step pics if you decide to tackle this.

Dale, the LR Workshop manual shows the rear panel as separate to the rear side panel, it isn't, well not on my (ex) 93 Disco or my 94 Disco, there are some phillip head screws at the back (near rear door). But the rear panel is spot welded to the rear side panel. So if you want to replace the rear panel you will have to take both the rear side panel and the rear panel off together. The rear side panel also has spot welds near the door lock pin and will have to be drilled out, no mention of ANY spot welds in the w/shop manual, bugger of a job. If you can repair the rear panel damage WITHOUT removing, do so, if you decide to take the whole lot off let me know and I will give you some helpful tips, Regards Frank.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I am going to try removing the new panel from the disco that the parts are coming from first. Fortunately the guy who owns it has had experience replacing these panels and will help me remove it. I shall post again after the weekend with details of how it all went.
