i have an engine watchdog on mine which has saved it (i hope) from cooking, from a new thermostat that opened very slowly if at all
Disco got a head of steam up tonight might have boiled dry not sure lots of steam took 10lt of coolant to fill
hope i didn't do a head temp gauge didn't hit the red so might be ok
found a crack in the header tank grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
new tank ordered from ebay yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhh should get it monday i hope

The black original tanks were crap.
Would have thought most are changed over to the clearer plastic.
Definately fit a low water alarm, its almost a must have.
If you put in 10L, that does not sound good.
Temp gauge needs water to read the actual temp, if no water, no reading.
I do hope its going to be a simple refill not a full rebuil, the heads hate being hot.
Both Disco1 and fender factory temperature gauges are flatspotted from 80 - 105 degrees give or take... as soon as the factory gauge starts to move upwards you are already over 105.
There would be some value in measuring actual coolant temperature once you have replaced header tank and refilled - and installed a low coolant alarm!
Take it for a drive and load up the engine on a long hill - by watching actual coolant temp closely you should be able to establish the integrity of the coolant system.

I recently installed a new white header tank bought on ebay from UK. $44 landed on my door step. I fitted a engine monitor and coolant loss combination monitor at the same time. The engine monitor is essentially a cylinder head temp. gauge. It runs at 83-84 degrees unloaded and around 90-94 towing a couple of tons and up to 98 degrees on long hills. Interesting to watch as a previous reply said the standard gauge just sits in the horizontal. I don't know what the highest safe CHT would be but I assume probably around 110 degrees.
Good luck with your problem.
Cheers, Ulti.
