Metal noise at speed, but with out load....

    Hi all,

    I have a 94 Disco.

My car is making loud metalic noises when it is rolling and has no load on it, the noise gets louder with speed.

Under acceleration or de-celeration the noise dissapears. I find this an odd scenario, as if it was a bearing you'd think the noise would get worse with more load.

I have had the gearbox totaly appart and found nothing worn.
The transfer box has been appart (looked good too), but i didn't dismantle the output shaft as the rest looked so good.

Has anyone had or heard of a similar problem.

I have had a similar noise when a diff pinion bearing failed. It was quiet under load, but got very noisy when under "float" conditions.

Check axial free play from both diffs.
The pinion is an hypoidal gear, and these gears move when load is changing, varying the noise.

    Regards
