Put the transfer case into neutral then you should be safe to tow it. Leave the engine idling for brakes/steering/lights.

try starting it in gear.. if it wont then its not a selector issue.

as the park brake pawl wont engage I would suggest that its likely the spud shaft out of the box has stripped or snapped.

Its relatively easy to check, remove the PTO cover plate from the back of the tcase and eyeball the shaft/gear

before it stopped going, was it sliding gear changes?
have you checked the auto oil level?
    need motor running to check.
auto's like to have oil, don't work without.
has the underside of the car have oil splattered on it, does it drip lots of oil?
have you checked the auto hoses from the box to the cooler?
you can tow it, as bee uty said, slip the t case into neutral and ok to tow.
    it just aint legal.

First thing I checked oil was ok, only done a service 5 months earlier, on a hot check it was sitting on the high mark but ground was very unlevel, it was so sudden, hopping you are right.
