Depends on the final use - if for looks go 16" if for rock hopping go 15" as they provide a bigger cussion between you and the rocks.
Hi all,
I'm looking to pickup a spare set of rims for the D1 and fitting some larger rubber on them, specifically some 35/36 Simex or 35's in another tread brand.
Firstly, are there any issues with running 15's on a 1997 D1??
And secondly, in your opinion, am I better having 16's with that much rubber, or does an inch in difference between 15 and 16 not really make a huge impact?? The rims will be fitted with beadlocks if that affects your input.
Thanks in advance.

Don't know definitively, though early rangies and discos came out with 15"
I would so like to not ask this, but I don't really understand the "Which Tyre" threads just yet.
I wen't 4WDing this weekend, up near Moore River. My Disco is a 95 model with standard tyres and rims. Unfortunately, I got bogged twice, and thought I was going to have to leave the car on the beach.
I can't believe how much softer the sand is north of Perth as opposed to down south, but anyway.
I would like better sand traction. I don't have a lift kit, and only the standard rims that came with the vehicle.
Can someone tell me:
(1) Will these tyres perform better on beach sand?
(2) Will they fit my vehicle ok.
(3) If some cutting is required is it something I can do?
I only use the Disco for 4Wding or getting to 4WD places, so day to day traffic type issues are not a concern.
Thanks in advance
Wongdai
15" rims fit OK on Disco 1s - had them on both my D1s.

Your not wrong about how soft the sand North of Perth is, I've been down to 10PSI on standard tyres up there and it was nerve racking. Its softer than any sand I've driven on over east or South west. The south west is probably the best sand driving conditions IMHO. (makes me wish I was back there - plug for Esperance)
AT are better because you dont have traction anyway, mudders just dig in.
A 33 inch tyre works well on a 15 inch rim because you have enough sidewall to give you flex as well as being able to maintain good road manners.
I ran 35's on my RRC and then D1 for years on 16 inch rims and never noticed that I was being left behind by vehicles running 15's. Keeping in mind most super aggressive tyres at 35 inches + are bias ply and not radials I would run a 16 inch rim as you have too much flex in the sidewall to get accurate steering. At those sizes you have to really adjust the way you drive to suit the tyres both on road and in the bush.
Re sand driving a wider tyre is better and you need to deflate your pressures to help you float on top of the sand. However a taller tire will also give you a greater footprint when deflated. The more tire you have contacting the surface the better. An dont spin the wheels unless you want to end up in China.
@Ian_T: Any specific ATs you recommend?
Other than the OME mitichies (205 these were the ones I let down to 10 or 12 never had to do it since), I have am using Cooper AT (235/75/16 second set) and I think they work well. However I was talking to a mate with a Pootrol who tows a boat on Frazer Island (drinks petrol like nothing else) he prefers the Cooper ST (he has had both) they clear the sand from the tread better than the AT. I have also noticed BFG alterains seem to work well on sand.
Some time around Chrismas I will put 235/85/16 Cooper ST on mine,(yeah baby) this will require a camel cut, and I am hoping because of the rellative narrow 32" tyre I wont have to spring for springs. (spring lift)
