Question 1998 300tdi compression issues HELP!

I have just found a compression issue in number one, it is down to 280psi and the other 3 are at 400psi. Is this fatal or expensive?

I love my Disco and planning a trip from perth to Sydney over the summer, am I going to need to get this sorted ASAP? If so how expensive is it going to be? Is it worth getting a gas at the same time? conversion too? Can you recommend any body in Perth?

1st things first, have you checked the valve clearances in number 1??

    As what Justin asked.

Is there any sign of oil in the coolant or water in the oil? If its not something simply like valve clearance it might be a head gasket on the way out and its leaking compression out through a hole in the gasket.

    Thanks for your comments!!

There is no evidence of water or coolant in the the oil. I think that I am going to need to book it into get the head gasket and valve clearances checked.

Will let you know the verdict.

There is a test kit you can buy that tests for combustion gases in the coolant. Is not a fool proof diagnosis for a sick head gasket but it can help.
