New discovery owner with questions.

I had a old 400,000km subaru that used to display the oil light on hot days when at idle. Because this was a banger I only put cheap super market oil in it. One day I actually had to buy proper good quality oil and the light went out.

You have a 270,000km engine so it is an old engine so I would suggest you use "old" engine oil that some car companies make. It is just a tad thicker at operating temperatures, still lubricates well and provides the amount of back pressure the pump is expecting.

Have a look near the oil filter housing and you should find it with a wire connected.

Take the wire off and remove the sender with an open-end spanner. Before you put the new sender in put a bit of thread sealant on it and clean the oil out of the female thread with a clean non-fluffy cloth. Re-connect wire and start engine.

If you haven't changed the engine oil, it is a good idea to do so and the filter as well. Use a quality oil of the correct grade, such as Penrite HPR 10,

Ok excellent thanks for that i will try that, jeez if it needs new crank bearings that is way out of my budget unfortunately, i wonder where i stand with the dealer if thats the case.. thanks for the help

Wouldn't even worry about that until the oil pressure switch and the oil change have been done. Thicker oil can keep a worn engine going for years.:). 270 000km is not the end of life span for a V8, often in excess of 350 000km before major overhauls are indicated. Just don't EVER get the engine hot enough to boil the radiator, that's harmful to a Rover V8. Fit a low coolant alarm if you are sensible! Search the forum for that.

Well i just replaced the oil pressure switch, did the oil and filter, put 20-50w oil in it (i think, from memory) and its running great, the light flashed at start up and thats it, only problem was the oil filter the previos owner did it up so tight i had to resort to heavy handed methods to get it off.. anyways thanks so much for the help.
