    Engine swap

My initial thinking is no, but Brother in law has asked if its possible to swap a P38 4.6L into a D1.

    Thoughts?

    cheers

The long engine is basically a straight swap. All your timing cover, manifolds, etc etc will fit, BUT you will have to fit a D1 camshaft as the P38a one has no facility to drive a distributor. Also need to fit D1 sump and oil pick up etc.

It is a good swap to do.

Thanks Justin. Incidently, this is the D1 in question. Am i imagining, or this an ES not SE?

Is there anything you need to do for fuel/ign timing etc with this swap? Or does the ECU automatically compensate for the increased engine size?

Nice looking vehicle Nick, like the Boost rims colour coded like that.
If it were an earlier example,(1994/95) I would say ES7, but IIRC SE7 was the later spec. Not 100% sure on THAT though.

With the 14CUX engine management, it doesn't control spark at all. The fuelling is adequate but not ideal, a 4.6 'chip' fuel map fitted to the factory ECU is available, and there are various other on the market also.

Ideally, with an auto trans, you'd want a standard EFI spec cam, and a chip upgrade to realise the full potential of the capacity increase.

hey Justin wht are your thoughts on the best 'chip' to use?

I've looked at several and lost the plot

I need someone who has hands on experience to give their thoughts - not the publishing hype

Hi blitz – haven’t you got one of bee utey’s mixer lpg setups with the closed loop? I was wondering how a chip would make any difference to your lpg mixtures. I’ve got the injected lpg and can see how a chip would work as the 14cux is part of the feedback loop but I imagine the feedback loop with the mixer type lpg doesn’t involve the 14cux? Apologies if I got this completely wrong!

yep you hit the nail on the head, short answer - I haven't got a bloody clue, which I guess is why I haven't done anything yet. Very happy with his work though

Mate, its an import, if its a jap import apart from the long block and heads there could be a million different things under that hood.

i don’t know the jap V8s but the Jap 300 tdIs are almost a different game

At least it hasn’t got the HONDA badge still on it
