    300tdi no start when hot

My 300tdi won't start when it is hot.I don't know if it is just the relay or if it is the solanoid.Once it cools down a bit the motor starts straight away.Has anyone else had the same problem? Because the starter is so close to the turbo I can't even check if the solenid is the problem.Could it just be the starter is getting too hot near the turbo?

I had this exact problem ended up being the starter was on its way out.....it started with slow turn over in winter and progressed to engine not starting after long journeys to engine not starting a short journeys on hot days..

Never had an ounce of trouble since changing starter probably 1.5/2 years ago

Strangely enough, it could quite easily be an earth problem.

Before you splash out on a new starter, next time you have a problem starting, test the earth theory by running a jump lead from the -ve to one of the starter bolts.

yes of course could be an earthing problem like CL has suggested...thinking about it mine when hot wouldn't start but that was due to not having any starter at all wouldn't even turn over until it cooled down....So probably unlikely to be the same problem if your is actually turning over

I had similar, starter motor would not throw in, thought it was the solenoid going, after several clicks of ignition (some times up to a minute later) it would start. Eventually battery died and new battery fixed it. That was two years ago, though my starter motor is on the way out, as it runs on some times after starting.

Unless you have a direct connection from the battery to the starter, you're assuming that everything else in between is working. Unless you have that direct connection, the only true way is to test it with a jump lead to eliminate it from your enquiries.

It makes it hard to test the starter when the turbo is so hot and close to the starter and once it is cool enough to check it will start OK

Have you checked the large earth strap that runs from the starter to the chassis?

If you get under the passenger side near the front tyre and look up at the starter motor, you can see the strap in question.

This strap can wear through on the chassis, depending on how it is orientated.

At least undo it at the chassis and give the connection a clean up.
