I really don't believe that LR V8's (3.5 3.9 & 4.6 and other variations P76 etc) are as bad as many would have you believe. As said there are many variables that contribute to the failings of any motor.

All I can say is my experience with various Rover V8's (which is no where near as much as I have with other mainstream V8's) has been albeit they are somewhat underpowered they generally have been very reliable.
Amongst most of my peers with LR Diesels of various configurations my reliability is just as good if not better, yet alone repair/maintenance costs which offsets the huge fuel bill.

I have no experience with the newer LR V8's (are they same as Jag motors?)and whilst they are evidently nice engines I shudder at the thought of what they will be like at 200K and what it will cost to repair/rebuild!
