Air compressor Disco1 V8 MY95 noisy
Hi all,
I have a MY95 Disco1 V8 and the air conditioning compressor is making a noise like a dry bearing. Not a rumbling noise but more like if you rub two bits of sheet metal together in a circular motion.
It only does it with the aircon on. Starts as soon as you push the button and stops when you press it again. So it must be either the clutch or the compressor itself.
It was very noticeable in the undercover car park this morning but not very noticeable later in the open. You had to get out of the car and then you could just hear it.
Anyone know if this is user fixable?

I'm not familiar with the V8 a/c compressor setup, but if it's the same as the 300Tdi one, then yes you can replace the bearing in the pulley.
It's not a hard job, just frustrating sometimes trying to get the circlip out and the bearing in.
This is a good tutorial for the 300Tdi compressor from incisor: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/projects-t...or-pulley.html

Thanks I saw that one.
However it was my thinking that if the compressor was making the noise all the time then it would be that bearing but if it only did it when turned on then it would be deeper inside.
Unless it is the outer bearing and just does it when its under load by turning the aircon on?

That would be my bet, particularly if it has just started, early warning noises when under load.

I replaced the bearing in the aircon pump yesterday. The bearing that came out was a little loose and rattly but nothing major. The noise didn't go away but since it didn't do it with the aircon off I didn't worry about it.
Well I am guessing the problem showed itself today as the water pump chewed itself to bits and jammed up. Oh well that saved me fault finding it.
Now to get a new one and drive 80kms to Dad's house where I left it. It died in his driveway when I went to leave.
