Tracking down a slight grinding/clunking noise.

    Hi All,
I've no idea how to describe over the net but I'll do my best....

My D1 V8 is occassionally making a small girnding/clunking type noise and very low speed, ie 5-10km/h. - Diff lock disengaged (std road driving)
It seems to do it when it feels like it and I can't get it to do it when I want help for another ear to track it down.

I started thinking it was from the rear but now Im unsure.

Seems that turning can encourage it but not 100% on that yet and its in frequent.
It was worse when I had the car fairly well laden carry a bit of weight.

I also think that I can almost feel the crunch/grind when it happens through the car so Im guessing its some form of drivetrain issue.

I've replaced both diffs with TrueTrac centres in the last 2months, new carrier bearing and oil. Otherwise not much has changed. Diff oils still look good, no metallics showing.

I've only got this weekend and the next to sort it out as Im heading to the high country in it over Xmas so don't want any dramas then.

Any leads on possible things to check would be great?

    Thanks in advance,
    Rez

I should add that I've not used Truetracs before this so is it possible now that they've been in a few months they've lossned up and making a standard functional noise as the gears mesh?

I did think that I'd only get clunking if I got a Locker so have been ruling it out so far.

start by checking your wheel bearings and steering swivels for slop/roughness in operation then check the UJ's. From here on in it can get expensive assuming its not something stupidly simple like a pipe or empty can that rattles onto something at certain vibrations.

Just did a heap more driving to test for noise. Driver rear sort of area. Will inspect rear uni and then start looking at wheel bearings.

I had to go for a decent drive to get the noise, so its not doing it when cold.

Efn Discos....can't work it out. All looks servicable. Wheel bearings probably nearing replacment time but nothings standing out as an issue to cause the noise. Discs are undersize so now that its all apart I'll leave it that way until Monday and replace discs/pads and wheel bearings and see how I go.

Might even do the Unis anyway, will price them up.

Just a follow up for others incase you get the same....

Replaced wheels bearings, checked Unis etc. Found slight play in front output shaft of T/C but no oil leaks around the seal like I've read on here happens when they're due for replacement.

So I went and saw a friends Dad who own a performance diff shop, took him for a drive and he said its the Truetrac meshing and to use a different oil.

Truetrac say to use standard oil as suggested my manufacturer eg pretty much std transaxle stuff.

I swapped this out for some Penrite 85/140 LSD oil and added Ford Motorsport friction modifier (stinky stuff) and bobs ya aunties lover.

No more noise, completed 3000km High Country trip no probs.

    Cheers,
    Rez
