I think 93/94 was the year, 3.5's had V belts and the 3.9's had serpintine, but I could be wrong. To check out the year model of the motor check the Vin # plate on the vehicle it came out against the engine # on the engine block, Regards Frank.
hi everyone would anyone know when the v8 engine changed belt type. ie from the old fan belt type to serpentine?
I'm looking at 97 model v8 replacment and it has the old belt type yet my 96 model has the serpentine which I found odd and wondered perhaps its an earlier model engine.
Is there anyway to tell from the engine type year of manufacture? I think from memory there is a plate on the rocker cover with this information on the drivers side but this could have been changed.
any help would be great thanks

Thanks for the information
do we know of any other way to check year of engine? as the vehicle is no longer available to check tags.
the plenum chamber has stamped 3.9 on it but i wonder if it bolts on to a 3.5.
is there anyway to check also a 3.9 to a 3.5 like a holden block has stamped on it 308 or 253 etc.
Yes my 92 model RRC has vbelts, the 93 RRC had vbelts PLUS a grooved belt for the alternator and AFAIR the 94 had serpentine.
I would think ditto for Disco 1

Find the engine number, which should be near the dipstick, and compare to the listed numbers here: Rover V8 Engine Numbers
That should confirm whether it is a 3.5 or 3.9 and from a Disco or Rangie.
3.5's (except military runs) stopped production in 1993. The V belted 3.9 engines were produced from Oct 1989 to December 1993. The serpentine engine was first produced in January 1994.
