I've been doing the timing belt got to the part of the manual where it says use the starter to remove the bottom pulley by hitting the starter once or twice though yeah don't like the idea but its the quickest way. So went to do it and the starter had no go not even a click is there a fuse that i'm now knowing off i looked at the ones in the bonnet next to the battery etc and then looked at the ones under the feet are there any that you need for the thing to start IE imobiliser or something silly that i'm missing? Help would be great took a lot of work to get the dam thing this far belts in and nearly ready to go.

I just replaced the starter on mine so the detail is still fresh. There are only 3 connections to the starter; 1 large connector to the battery positive, 1 large connector to ground/body, 1 small connector to energise the solenoid. Check the earth and large positive connector, then run a small cable from the battery positive to the small connector on the starter to start the engine.

Traveller,if the earth lead from the battery which is normally bolted to one of the timing cover bolts is not connected there will be no power to anything, I'm assuming he has disconnected the earth from the timing cover, Regards Frank.

Does the starter operate with the socket and bar off the crankshaft pulley bolt? We had a separate starter fault that was caused by the earth strap from the starter motor to the chassis, it looked OK until we rattled it. When we did our Tdi 200 Timing Belt we disconnected the fuel pump solenoid wire first so when using the starter to undo the Crankshaft Pulley bolt the engine had no chance of starting, this has happened its in a post. We had to leave some space between the socket bar and chassis rail to allow the starter to get some momentum. Sounds rough but it worked, we used a high impact socket.
got it to go there was a fault with the wire that runs into the top of the starter and now going.

As frank said traveller you need the earth from the battery connected in order to connect the cars electric circuit, the earth on the starter motor is extra to the earth on the battery, both need to be connected.
As for the bolt cant you get a nice breaker bar and give it a whack with a hammer? A few decent hits was enough to crack mine and allow it to be undone with a ratchet.
