what winch is best for me

After a few ideas pro's and con's for any brand winch.. I need to hear the horror stories and the dream runs some of you have had with your winches... I've had some bad luck in the wifes jeep with her Tmax winch and now im looking at getting a winch myself and a replacement for the wifes dead winch... IronMan monster winch,,,,, Tigerz winches,,,,,,, Warn,,,,, and all the other no name brands that are coming into the market... Is 12000lb as big as they get and is there such a thing as too big what size is best suited to a fully kitted out disco 1 and possibly pulling an offroad camper tralier???? Dyneema rope,,, synthetic rope or wire cable whats best and what lasts longest and what is safest?????

Its not so much a matter of "too big" as "too heavy".

For a given length of cable a synthetic rope / dyneema (same thing) is MUCH lighter than steel cable.

The overall weight will be important as it may require you to upgrade front springs etc if too heavy.

many of the cheaper winches are pretty much identical.

I've done a lot fo looking and I think if it was my money I;d be buying a Tigerz winch, stripping a regreasing it, and then would be happy.
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

for the Disco I've been thinking more along the lines of Ironman monster 12000lb just for the simple fact that when touring I'll be pulling an offroad camper trailer so that extra weight has to be taken into account.

We fitted a Premier 4500 after reading the 4WD Action magazine Winch Comparison if I remember correctly the Warn came top the Premier a runner up. Our choice was on performance and price, anything too steep we use a pulley block with two falls doubling the pull capacity.
One main point was that they all needed a strip down and lubrication annually we are careful about protective spray on the steel rope to stop corrosion. Only problem was a loose wire in the hand control.

Don't buy a winch based on so called capacity, winches rated at 12,000lb capacity, what does that mean, does it mean that the winch is capable of pulling 12,000lbs, maybe, base your purchase on the Safe Working Load (SWL) or the Working Load Limit (WLL) of the wire/rope supplied.
I would suggest 11mm to 12mm IWRC galvanised cable, it has 7 strands of wire compared to non-winch wire which only has 6, when buying a winch, if the seller cannot tell you what the SWL/WLL of the wire/rope supplied, go else where.
As "they" say, a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link, if a seller can only tell you the Guaranteed Breaking Strain (GBS) or the breaking strain of the wire/rope then divide that by 6 and that will give you an idea of what the SWL or WLL is of that cablewire/rope and winch. NEVER EVER work that winch/cable/rope to the breaking strain, you may kill someone, even yourself, Regards Frank.
