strange electrical problems after flat battery

After coming home from 2 weeks holiday to find my disco 300tdi's main battery to be flat (neighbour had moved it and left the park lights on - doh!)), I am now having some strange electrical issues.

Firstly, I have fully charged the battery (which is 10 months old) again, and am getting about 13v out of it. The battery is starting the engine as per normal.

With the engine not running, but the ignition on, the only electrical systems that seem to work are the wipers/washer and the park lights. Nothing else goes, including the central locking.

When the engine is running and revving all systems work, however at idle if I try to turn on the headlights the charge warning light on the dash comes on, and no headlights. Give the engine a good rev, and the charge light goes out and the lights come on.

Now I could see that a failing alternator could maybe cause the problems when the engine is running, but it shouldn't have any effect when it's not running - should it?

Any advise from someone that understands electrickery would be hugely appreciated.

    Cheers
    Geoff

Have you checked the water level in the batery, since it went flat and then been recharged?

    Hi.
It's a sealed Century heavy duty battery, and I have been able to fully recharge it.

If some diode in the alternator is shortcut, it tends to lower the battery, by running or not running engine.
I'm afraid that this can be your problem.

Agreed. I had a similar problem recently with a Bosch alternator. I couldn't work out why my lights etc would go very dull at idle dragging the battery voltage right down. Battery was brand new. A new regulator fixed mine luckily. Hasn't done it since. You will probably need another alternator.

Wouldn't it be worthwhile to check the currect draw on the battery first, and also maybe look at the fusible links.
Maybe that smaller wire to the battery, if its like my RRC has a poor contact.
I started mine the othe rday after regassing the aircon and only had 11volts, but it was just the small wire being loose on the +terminal.

    Thanks everyone for your input.

I've suspected for a while that the diode pack on the alternator has been a bit dodgy (strange tacho readings mainly). Also it is only a 65 amp model, and I have dual batteries, so I have ordered a new 100amp alternator from the UK which should be here next week.

I will let you know the results once it is installed.

    Thanks
    Geoff

    Geoff,
check the "W" terminal, the connector in the corresponding cable and its tightness to the cable. Usually bad tachometer readings are produced by poor contact in this connection.

Just a quick update on my electrical problems.

    PROBLEM SOLVED!!!

Turns out it was a faulty alternator. Put a new 100amp model in and everyting is running properly now.

Of course it wasn't quite that simple! Turns out the previous owner had fitted an alternator from an earlier model Disco - one with the larger pulley. To make that work he had to use the larger serpentine belt.
So when I went to refit the belt to the new alternator, it was too big. Fortunately Repco had the right one in stock.
Then she blew the Alternator fuse, because the fuse that had been installed was 80amp instead of the correct 100amp one. So back to repco again!

All turned out OK in the end though. New alternator is putting out just over 14v to both batteries, and all the other electrical systems are working normally again.

Nothing's ever simple with a Disco.

Sounds like it was simple enough.

Discoverys are very easy to sort.
