My Dodgy Disco, an update and a plea for advice....

Just try to find an Oring the correct size and put that on. i think you will be lucky to find a gasket. Mine is broken and that is what I did.

The hat shaped thing is the fuel pressure regulator. Make sure the hose is not cracked. The FPR adjusts the pressure of the fuel to the injectors to be a constant pressure above atmospheric pressure, by reducing the pressure at idle, so that the injection always works at the same pressure over atmospheric.
Make sure the plate that the IAC screws into is tight on the plenum. and if loose smear some sealant on the gasket surface before tightening.

The other tube to the 3 way connector is not attached to the IAC is it? It sounds like the vents from the gearbox and transfer case, but I am not familiar with thedisco layout.

Yes, from the IAC housing there is 1 fat and two small tubes. One to the Fuel thingy, one to the three way, the fat one off somwhere else, can't remember now.....

Mate. Don't get overwhelmed by it all, slow and steady wins the race. If you get stuck. Post up a picture of the offending item and someone will have advise on how to adjust fix it. For my two bobs worth, have you checked the vacuum advance on the distributor. If you look at the side of the distributer there is a dome shaped device which should have a small tube
(vac hose) running to the top of the Phlemen tube. Disconnect it from the top and suck on it and block the end with your tongue. It should hold vacuum. if it is stuffed this will effect the timing of the vehicle. Don't panic the car will run without it but the timing will be effected. :D

Only holds a vavuum if I discnnect both ends and put my thumb over one end while sucking on the other. While attached to either the plenum or the dizzy if I suck the other end I just get a mouthfull of air.

this is a great link about the 14CUX, you should read it to educate yourself a bit more about your fuel injection system it contains multimeter readings for the coolant sensor, and just about all the other sensors used by the 14CUX, it is very helpful

as for the base idle, it is covered in the RAVE manual, however this site Fuel injection covers the procedure also

It"s the vac advance capsule you are supposed to be testing! Sounds like it's stuffed, you will need another from someone like Advance Diaphragm Options
It affects your economy quite a lot as it advances the ignition timing while you are at cruising throttle.

Ah! So I have found my first actual faulty bit that needs to be replaced! It deffinatly did not hold a vacuum when I sucked on it whilst attaced to the vac advance, I just got unending air though it. OK, will look into how to do that in the manual!

Performance Ignitions in Nunawading sell them. I got mine from there and cost around $70. Pretty easy to replace, I did not even remove the distributor to do it.

I managed to replace my vac advance not so long ago - bought one from the mob above and you get a bit of cash back when you post them the old one. Its not too hard - I'm no mechanical whizzkid - but some of the screws are a bit awkward to get at without removing the dissy - I bought a right angle screwdriver from a $2 shop that did the trick. Some good instructions on how to fit it here:

Also I'm not sure where you are in Melbourne but I broke down there last Easter weekend and was very impressed with the service and knowledge of the guys at Ritters. I had a bung Universal joint on the drive shaft and they booked me in last minute, fixed it and got me on my way with a pubilc holiday looming. My only experience with LR mechanics in Vic but a good one! :D
