    Tdi Fuel Guage problems

Recently filled up with fuel on the Tdi and could only put 40 litres in, so I wondered what the guage was playing at. Without worrying about it I zeroed the trip counter so I know how many Kms I had done since fueling up. That was 2 days ago and I have done about 200kms since filling up. Today the orange low fuel light came on even though the fuel guage itself was (incorrectly) reading between a half and a quarter tank! Anyone had this problem before now? Do I need to open up the fuel tank and get to the sender? How come the low fuel warning light came on even though the guage was so high, I would have though they were linked in some way. Cheers
