    Leaking sunroof

Just gave my Disco a clean and found that the sunroof must be leaking like a siv. Carpet underlay in the front is soaked and stinking. Heading out to Tassie for a 4 day break but when i get back its strip the seats and carpet and dry the crap out then i need to fix the leak> This is where you guys come in... I know there is someone out there who has fixed this prob the right way or knows of a repairer i can take it to so they can fix/service my sunroof. Or is it just as easy to have it removed and a piece of steel put in its place to plug the sucker for good.

i don't have any experience with leaks from the sunroof, and i have two in my d1,
but can i suggest you look into the sunroof drains, and see if they are clogged.
i have cleaned the seals on mine and the glass, but they do wisp a bit of wind noise over 110 kph.

There's a brilliant step by step article in the latest 2 editions of Land Rover International dealing with dismantling, fixing and refitting sunfoofs.

From the pics it doesn't look any more difficult than other jobs on the Disco, might be worth a squizz

    Hope this helps

    Cheers

I get the same problem (as do a lot of others). I haven't managed to work out yet what the problem is.

Let me know how you go.

My sunroof was leaking very badly from the day I collected it['96 model] Problem turned out to be an acorn stuck in the drivers side drain outlet.......i didn't see it the first couple of times I cleaned the area around it. Hasn't leaked since. Good luck

Finally got the chance to get the compressor out today and try blowing out the drain holes... First check for blocked holes with watering can.. passenger side "perfect"...... drivers side ZERO flow....... connect blower nozzle push into hole and press... wipe face and remove blow back of stinky black crud and try again.... get watering can test and hey presto we have "perfect" flow on drivers side too... Next sunny day off I'll remove the sunroof and give all runners etc a good cleaning and lube and make sure the drain holes in the rear and clean and flowing as well..
Thanks to all who replyed to this post your help was much appreciated

Is this little white hole at the bottom of this picture the drain hole?

I poured some water down it, and it ended up dripping down from my sunvisor. I tried blowing it out with an air compressor but no real change.

    Any ideas?

The drain holes are in the very front corners you can't miss them once you realize exactly where they are. If you have another hole then I'd be double checking why it's there and filling it if it's not meant to be there.

You've made a great start on sorting this issue out, purely with cleaning out the drain holes.

My Disco 1 used to leak from the front sunroof too & I found it had the same drain hole issue. They're very small holes & it won't take long for a bit of pony to build up in there. I cleaned both sets of drain holes on both roofs, & also replaced both glass seals for good measure. The holes are located in the very corners, under the plastic trim. I used a long length of bicycle brake cable or gear cable to poke down first & free some of the debris. A new cable will be long enough to see poking out underneath the vehicle when you've cleared the debris.

If you can't obtain new seals (took me a while & that was back in 2006), I find removing the seal, thoroughly cleaning the seal with WD40 or similar, then smearing Vaseline all around it will do the trick.

This leads me nicely to a topic that I was going to post...the infamous wet rear end! Not sure if you guys had the same issue here, but Disco's were notorious for leaking through the alpine seals &, more inconspicuously, the external body seals on the roof capping. The water inevitably ended up under the rear carpet & rubber underlay, & would rot the floor out. I caught mine in time to get away with a small amount of welding work.

Has anybody here experienced a sodden rear floor on there Disco 1? Is it a common problem, or not so much because of the better weather conditions?

    Cheers,

    Kev
