Even with a lift, if you're not willing to trim the rear guards behind the back wheels, then 245/70R16 (basically stock) is virtually all that will fit.

Depending on brand and tyre type you may get away with 245/75R16.

But previous 245/75R16 I have had still just touched the rear guard at the back when crossing dips in car parks for example.
Mainly just that bent in bit on the bottom of the rear guard, so you could trim that and not see it.

Also, in between these sizes is 255/70R16.
This size may also fit with no cutting, but I have not had this size, so can not be sure.

With a lift you can get up to 265/75R16 (31.6 inch) or 235/85R16 (31.7 inch), but as you increase to these sizes you will require more rear guard trimming, and possibly a small trim at the front of the rear arch (but you can’t see this).

Again it depends on brand and tyre type as some are larger/smaller than they actually are, so some 265s for example may not fit within the guards very well.

You will probably have to wind out the steering stops a little and thus lose a bit of turning circle, and if you don't have a bullbar you'll need to trim the plastic front bumper in front of the tyres.

You may also need to reshape the metal bracket part that holds the rear mud flaps, as offroad the tyres can go up and just touch at the point at which the bracket turns to a 45 degree downward angle (have a look inside of the rear guard, you’ll see what I mean). You can probably get away without doing this unless they hit bad.

Just under 32 inch is also about as big as you can really go without losing too much go with the standard gearing, although you will still notice it at this size, especially with a manual.

Once you hit 33 inch, then you really need offset rims so you don't hit the tyres on the inner guards, then flares so they don't hit the outer guards and stick out too far, plus a pretty big full guard chop before fitting the flares, and a 2 inch body lift wouldn't go astray as well, oh and a gearing change to get moving again.

Don’t forget, bigger tyres means your speedo will be out too.

Regardless of lift (which doesnt change up travel just static) you can only go 245-70-16..

Any bigger and you WILL be cutting...

245-75-16 or 235-85-16 will fit with a Camel Cut... A small painless trim of a section of the rear quarter.

or he could fit the 235/85's and go off road, flex it up and let the tyres do their own mods to the rear quarters haha

It's only thin aluminium sheet, so any cutting tool will do the job.

I've heard of people using tin snips, hacksaws and angle grinders.

I personally prefer one of those dremel type of small cutting / shaping tools.

A cheapy one of those with a box of 1 inch cutting discs and you can do a super fine job.
