i love the TDI!!
Just went down to Ritters Land Rover and test drove an Auto TDi with 150000 on the clock and apart from it being auto (I'm only going to buy a manual) the engine and general drive of it seemed a lot more solid than the V8. Sure it wasn't as fast off the mark but it wasn't too slow either and I really liked it.
Bottom line, I'm selling my V8 and getting a decent TDi manual (hopefully with a bit of extra kit for outdoors stuff and low K's) so if anyone knows of one going let me know![]()

I did the same thing a couple of years ago, sold my 95 ES which I loved but couldn't afford to keep on the road and bought a 98 Tdi.
My 98 Tdi is not perfect by any means but there's no ABS no SRS and no three amigos. so it suites me.

I love my Tdi Defender but I do miss my Range Rover V8.

I have a 97 tdi and love it, its manual and often wish I had an auto especially as we often launch jet ski in ocean along beach and go to Robe etc.
There is currently a very good looking tdi in the market section here.
Good ones are not cheap, so one with the lot and looked after I would budget $8-10k.
Should you ever want more poke, come over to SA and Bee utey can do a Dgas conversion. Makes a big difference for very little money after the rebate and gives more range, economy, power, torque and overall enjoyment.

I did actually like the auto a fair bit but it's auto...and for some reason I just want a manual, it just makes more sense in my head to have a manual in a serious 4WD but maybe I'm being silly. $8-$10k is what I'm expecting so that sounds decent. There was a '97 with only 107000km on the clock up in NSW on carsales but he's probably sold already since he won't return any of my calls![]()
Manuals only excel in 2 areas - Downhill and you can roll start them.
I have never had a problem tho going downhill in my Auto 4wd's.
Besides that autos are MUCH better for going up hills, rock climbing, and sand driving. (and city/peak hour driving) And autos don't lose boost going up through gears.
I would seriously consider an auto tdi.
young angus of course a vehicle with 1/2 the kms on it will drive nice, they are still virgin tight and have lossened up as much as a high millage one.
I have 280 on my v8k, my bro inlaw has one with 165 kms on it they both fe3el different, his feels stiffer ,mine feels loose;.
Thats why car yards get you to test drive cars, they know you drive a dunger and then hop into a secondhand car with less kms and you fall in love with the one on offer as it is different
my 97 TDI is an auto and I don't think I could drive a manual again, the only way I would consider swapping back to a manual is if my auto blows up and I can't can't afford the $4000 Bill.
Young Angus you wouldn't be too disappointed with an auto.
