Where's the cheapest place to buy a water pump?

Guy at Ritters told me my water pump is what's making all the weird whistle noises so I need to replace it...any recommendations where the best place is to get one of these or is it much of a muchness? He said the part would be a couple of hundred bucks plus fitting. Is it a nasty job? I'm getting a whole lot more competent doing my own mechanic work on this baby

That squealing noise is pretty common at low engine revs, and as you turn it off, when The pump seal is on the way out. next step is bearing failure and/ or leaks so yes best to do it soon. If you have a 1994 on serpentine single belt engine, it is an easy job but be careful to watch for coolant leaks from the timing cover afterwards as you have to remove the 4 long bolts thsat go through the timing cover and water pump, and by disturbing these the gasket can leak later.

Don't skimp on pump quality, OE or genuine aren't all that pricey, especially if you aren't payning anyone to do the job.

    What justinc said.

The cheap ones tend to use what looks like cutouts off a coke can as blades, garden hose as seals and bearings that last no longer than Millie Vanilli did.

Water pump is a major part in the protection of your engine, if you're gonna skimp on something, do it on birthday presents and save money that way.

Haha point taken, I will definitely not skimp on a water pump. I'm more concerned if it's a job I can do myself or if I should get the garage to do it when I go in for a basic service soon.

OEM item only in my book.

I get mine from MR automotive but if you can wait a while longer LSD automotive (they're members on here) can get them for you as well.

I recently changed mine and it cost $160 from FWD with a cast impeller.
Thanks for the tip on the leak JC as mine leaks now and I couldn't figure out where it was coming from. The leak is on the passenger side of the motor.
How do you fix it? Pull it apart again and remove and reseal the timing cover I assume.

Did my water pump recently on a 97 3.9 after the viscous fan bolt from the pump snapped off and punctured the radiator also. The last owner has welded the viscous fan solid thinking it was faulty and in doing so the bolt has been stressed over time and finally broke .It was a job that I have been meaning to do for a while and even bought a new OE viscous unit to fit ages ago,oh well. It,s very important to use a good sealant on the bolts that go into the timing cover to prevent them leaking,I use a non hardening black aviation gasket sealant and also a little on the gasket as well. The water pump replacement in not too big a job I think.
    Cheers
    Shane.
