Question Winch location for D1 ARB bar

    Hello all

After some help. I have only just recently got my Disco back from the panel beaters after I (ahem ) rearranged the back end of a Cruiser......

Anyways, the old ARB bar off a Range Rover that I had on the front was damaged too bad to fix and got replaced with the "proper" one for my D1 (complete with crush cans ). Fortunately my Warn XD9000 survived.

Now comes the query, the panelbeater had trouble fitting the winch onto the new bar and consequently took it to the local ARB guys to do. Apparently they scratched their heads as well and the winch has ended up being fitted under the winch plate hanging down almost to the same height off the ground as the steering protector........wt.... .

From what I see, it would only be a couple of trips before my winch would be full of crap and not work or even damaged by rock strike.

Can anyone out there tell me, or show me what their D1 with an ARB bar and a winch looks like please?

    Cheers

Since you have crush cans you must have airbags which means it needs to be mounted to a cradle on the chassis. My D1 has no airbags so is mounted directly to the bar so my photos would be no good for you.

Yes, mine has the drivers side SRS airbag.

There is a separate winch cradle mounted between the chassis rails with a series of winch mount holes in it. It looks like there is a enough space to sit the winch on top of this plate, BUT with some measuring, the aircon pipes and fans foul where the back of the winch would be.......DOH! Other option (the one they took) is to mount the winch under this plate where there's plenty of room (and nice and close to terrafirma......).

    Anyone got a similar setup.....please...

Mine is exactly the same and puzzled me when i first fitted it, as utemad said if you have windbags you have to use the cradle to mount to the chassis and not the bar to mount the winch. The winch is a bit exposed for my liking and i have bneen thinking about using a sheet of checker plate alloy to make a guard for it.

I used to have a checquer plate guard from the old bar to the steering protector, only problem is the new bar is further away. Hhhmm, have to get some more alloy, what a shame .

I have the same bar and yes the winch is fitted correctly, it does hang down a bit and is quite exposed.
You can get a purpose made bash plate from ARB, but I guess it would be $$$, I am going to get some alloy sheet folded when I get around to it, there ate holes in the bar and the winch carrier plate to accommmodate fitting.

See below for a exert from the fitting instructions

    FOR WINCH BARS ONLY:
    • a.) Fit the winch guard (optional for 8 or 9,000lb Winch) to the brush bar and winch cradle using the M8 x 20mm bolts, flat washers, spring washers and nuts. Align the guard with the brush bar then tighten the bolts.

    Hope it helps

Wondered if I can jump in on this thread.

I have an ARB bull bar but don't think its compatible with a winch as it has no obvious signs or gaps. Although I have been told it is compatible and the winch goes underneath.

Reading from the diagram from Sidders, is it compatible or not.

Wanting to get a Rope winch, any recommendations please.

The diagram I posted is form the fitting instructions for the delux winch bar, which has the cutout for the fairlead, I would think that all winch compatible bars would have this??.
If you could get the winch mounting plate to fit behind the non winch bar ( it is a tight fit), I think you could modify the bar, to suit?
There was a winch mounting plate on Evilbay a while a go, not sure if it is still there, but you would want to make sure it fitted behind the bar.

Other that that, some basic fab work could see a mount knocked up fairly easily, probably a lot cheaper than ARB genuine as well.

    Hope that helps

Thanks for that, Cant see any thing that allows for a winch but already enquired about fitting one, even if we have to modify it or something.
