Thread: 1994 tdi auto third gear torque converter lock up

The D1 auto only locks in fourth as you know, whereas the auto in D2s locks up in third and fourth.

I am not sure what is required, but I am aware that some of the internals from the D2 auto can be put in the D1 auto to allow the third gear lockup.

I believe you need some internals from a D2 4HP24 auto to put in your D1 4HP22 auto (I think those are the numbers).

I asked around recently and the only mob I could find that do this mod was Manuel Automatics Thomastown Vic, it was not cheap and they quoted around $4000 for the mod and overhaul of the box and that did not include fitting as i'm in Sydney. I read somewhere that it was a valve mod to get the lockup to occur in 3rd.

I had that exact mod done (3rd gear lockup conversion) almost 18 mths ago now by a mob in Melbourne (ATS). This was on an exchange basis as my old auto was fubar inside. Cost was in the low $3k, so all up with fitting by my local LR man was a touch under $4k.

In terms of what is actually done, not sure. I think it involved some modification of the valve body or individual valves????? What I do know is it has made towing our 1300 odd kg camper trailer much nicer on the gearbox being able to lock it in 3rd and not hunt back and forth from 3rd to 4th (lockup) all the time.


Sorry I can't be much more help. Except to say, make sure you uprate the auto cooling at the same time. Burnt fluid and clutches (from overheating) screw your auto up quick smart.
