I had that exact mod done (3rd gear lockup conversion) almost 18 mths ago now by a mob in Melbourne (ATS). This was on an exchange basis as my old auto was fubar inside. Cost was in the low $3k, so all up with fitting by my local LR man was a touch under $4k.
In terms of what is actually done, not sure. I think it involved some modification of the valve body or individual valves????? What I do know is it has made towing our 1300 odd kg camper trailer much nicer on the gearbox being able to lock it in 3rd and not hunt back and forth from 3rd to 4th (lockup) all the time.
Sorry I can't be much more help. Except to say, make sure you uprate the auto cooling at the same time. Burnt fluid and clutches (from overheating) screw your auto up quick smart.
