    Test drive

    Hi all
I test drove a 1998 V8i dual fuel today from a car yard - it has 184K on the clock. I am really happy with it - seemed to have more pick up than a Tdi I drove earlier. I have a few questions I hoped I could get some advice on please,
    1. One of the rear roof windows had rust along the bottom edge of the window - is this going to be a big issue - it did have small spots of rust near the windows of all the 4 doors as well, but we couldnt find much anywhere else,
    2. Is gas more economical to run around town than petrol as I would be using it everyday, or should I keep with looking for a diesel as I have been told there are more economical?
    3. The service book has its last entry at 120K, although was serviced again just recently - my plan would be to have it vehicle inspected if I went ahead with it
    4. He is asking $7k for it, it sounds bit steep to me, but I havent been able to find a lot to compare the price to, does this sound like a fair price?
    Any comment appreciated
    Thanks

The rust around the alpine windows is a common problem... necessary to fix this before it progresses too much (a search on this forum will yield lots of advice). Check under the carpet at the door sills, and especially undo the the screws and lift the plastic strip of the rear compartment at the door entrance. You may have even more rust than you realise.

As for your comparisons with the 300tdi variant, I'm biased, but I would go for the diesel everytime. The lpg may be relatively cheap to run, if you don't mind filling up every 200 km. Diesel for me.

The lack of service history would have me turning my back on it straight away, and not even bothering with a mechanical check.

Besides which, for a v8 at that price... tell him he's dreaming.

V8's don't like missing oil changes. Buggers the cams....

I'd think that for similar money + a bit more you'd be able to get a diesel. Is $7K your limit in terms of a budget?

    For a D1 I would expect to pay around 7-8k. For a V8 I would expect about 4-6k.

There are several great V8's on gas which by the way is way cheaper to run than plain petrol obviously but only marginally cheaper than diesel.
Refills can get annoying but depending on tank configaration can be up to 400km's.

There was a tdi 96 for sale recently that went for $16k. had 150k km's on the clock and was very clean.

I know because I looked at it and thought, wow, pricey but no money to spend. Guy had full proper records, all the extras I wanted and leather which to me is a must in a 4wd as its easy to clean.

What I am saying, is spend $6-7 or 8K on one and than another $5-8k on getting it reliable and the way you want or just buy one that's already the way you want and near perfect if that is possible.
Buy cheap and do reapirs and upgrades or buy one that has it all done, you do the maths. Not genius level.

I say, drive as many as possible and compare and make sure you get history and receipts and not just oil changes either.

Market section on here is also very good. take a look.

I know of a good V8 disco for sale also in victoria if you keen to take a look, pm me.

Hi I have a 1997 v8 on gas it has 240ks on the clock and after bee-uty (LPG GOD) sorted out a few gas issues (nothing to serious) it runs really good on gas and petrol (premium only) Im really pleased with it and after trying a few Dirty diesels, V8 was for me. It all depends on what you are doing with if traveling long distance than proberly diesel is the way to go but having said that i get around 3-350 ks on gas and 150-200 on petrol (small tank). All i will say is maintenace is the key, hopes this helps.

I would pay 7k for a V8 D1 on gas and as far as the history goes its a V8 so there is nothing major that it would have missed inbetween those k's, a diesel would need a timing belt so history is a must but petrol as long as the rest lloks and goes like it should and there is no noticeable problems then it should be fine.
