    V8 DISCOVERY ENGINE/FUEL PROBLEM

    HI all,

My 93 3.9L discovery has a problem, when driving the engine occasionly starts coughing and after a few seconds the engine turns off, it sounds as if it is not getting fuel, i replaced the fuel filter but the problem still exists, im hoping someone here can help me out before i have to take it to the mechanics.

    cheers

If power is lost to the MAF then engine will shut down. So check the plug into the MAF and its connectors.

Likewise - the ignition module sits on the side of the dissy and if there is a dry joint in there caused by heat (or excessive cold) the engine will shut down. When the engine has failed to proceed - check your spark.

Fuel pump dying? Time for a replacement perhaps. Search "Bosch fuel pump replacement" on this forum. Not hard to replace.

thanks for that, i have tried those things, it doesnt seem to be electrical, as it doesnt just die suddenly, also sometimes it recovers before turning off..

    cheers

    A couple of possibles
The fuel pump is dying. (also unlikely but happened to me. The filter into the bottom of the pump has a split and the pump inlet blocks. The engine stops, the blockage falls out, and restarts OK until next time)

The TPS has a wear spot and goes outside the ECU tolerances.

I thought the same thing, but it only happens every 20min or so, would the fuel pump do that?

There are also a couple of troublesome connectors in the fuel pump circuit. The problem is, the fuel pump draws more current than usual when wearing out. Brushes/connections get hot, disconnect, then sometimes reconnect.

The main connector problem is the plug on top of the fuel tank assembly, access is through the floor under the carpet. Then there is another plug above the rear muffler. Both plugs should be disconnected and checked for blackened plastic around the power wires.

However intermittent pumps are common. If it stops at the side of the road and a decent drop kick to the tank starts it again, it's usually the pump. Next time it stops check the fuel pump is audible just after you release the key from cranking.

BTW I have met some faulty ignition amps that come and go. Again a Bosch ignition amp replacement is possible, search or I can link it. Check all power connectors around the coil for tightness.
