Play in the front shaft is normal.
Hi all after trawling through the gearbox /diff threads I cant find anyone with the same problem as me
History
I have a 1996 disco v8 manual its done 240ks
The drivetrain whines (normal for a 4x4 with all the diffs and gearboxs) except when traveling at around 80+ ks an hour it sometimes makes a really loud what i can only describe as a whinning sound, when i lift off the gas and then put my foot down again it goes away. Its done this now about 7-8 times and ive noticed it happens when in 3rd or 5th gear under no heavy load.
I have spoken to a landrover mechanic and he seems to think if it was the gearbox the sound would be there all the time. Although he was helpful he would want $$$ to investigate more
I have cheaked underneath and can find no loose nuts on any of the propshafts, handbrake or diffs. I did notice the rear propshaft had no play at all while the front propshaft had about 5-10 degrees movement in each direction. Not sure if thats normal![]()
Can anyone help?![]()
Play in the front shaft is normal.
I would suspect the pinion bearings and preload in the diffs.
