You might want to find the redline for the PAS pump first - that's usually the first thing that goes 'pop'.
Don't ask me how I know though.
After reading MSD l've often wondered what is the red line on a 3.9 and do they have a rev limiter like most EFI motors ..My Disco certainly revs a lot freer than the 3.5 in my ex 84 RR ..Gary

99 views and only one answer that now has me worrying when my PS pump will grande itself :-) this donk does mind a good rev but an answer would be good as to much of a good thing is not always good for us ..Gary
the limiter is usually the valve bounce.

I have never had valve bounce in my 3.5 or 3.9. I usually chicken out and back off or change gears once it doesn't sound like a V8 anymore, it becomes a loud continuous scream.
Vehicles with hydrauclic tappets usually are limited in revs by the "pump up" action of the lifters. eg: the lifters cannot expel or take in any more oil, thus causing the valves to remain open a bit on each stroke of the piston therefore not allowing proper compression. This then limits the revs of the motor.
I've had my 3.5 out to 5500rpm and would not like to do it again as it sounded terrible. Bob
You ant herd nothing till you hear me red 186 in me ski boat dance them valves![]()
AS above the lifters are designed to pump up before 6K .
The fuel on a 3.9 14CUX flat lines after 4800, so it slows down then, unless you fit a Tornado chip. BTW that is how chip people claim large power increases , but it is all over 4800. Useful NOT unless in a TR8.
The bottom end is good for (just) over 6K , rarely, but the main bearing caps registers can loosen with any over indulgence, then the bearing cap shuffles, then the bolts fall out, then BANG.
For revs 4.0-4.6 is the go for the bottom end.
