97 air bag steering wheel wanting to change it!

Hi i'm building a toy and i'm wanting to get rid of the air bag steering wheel for obvious reasons.

I've looked for a boss kit but it looks like there isn't one is this true?

Also if that is true what can i do is there any over way? Maybe change the sterring shaft?

there must be some way as the 97 disco came out with out air bags!
    Any help would be great.

    Thanks Adam

Yeah, great idea. I've wanted to change my steering wheel for a while as I think the previous owner got stuck in a traffic jam and got hungry. I understand that legislation disallows for removal of the airbag in vehicles like mine that were imported with the system in-place, but for others, fling it.

Hahaha good laugh first thing in the morning that imagining someone gnawing on their steering wheel!

I'm also interested in how you go about replacing steering wheels.

My newly acquired Tdi has a bit of a worn steering wheel and I'd like to get it either replaced or repaired...it's a leather interior SE+ so does this mean it's a leather steering wheel also and I could get it re-upholstered? There isn't much left of it to tell if it was leather covered or just a worn out plastic one. It's just a bit sticky that's all because it's been well used.

Can you just replace a steering wheel in an air-bag car or is that a job for the professionals?

Sorry for the partial hijack, I was going to post my own thread but figured it was pretty much the same topic

Mines a SE7 with leather but the steering wheels miss out in that luxury mate:-( you can remove it the air bag just unplugs from the loom. It's just if your going to keep the airbag gone you may have to do other things of what I have no idea. Good to hear you may have found one Adam. Does that mean were going for a play sometime soon???

    Adam,
what if you just removed the balloon , then you could use the rotary connection to run some funky wiring for switches / GPS / Navs in the centre of the wheel?

Once you take the airbag out of the centre, the wheel is still usuable.

Leather bound steering wheels are available outright from TRS in Adelaide. Ask your local tame motor trimmer to quote you for a repair.
