3.9 head gaskets
i have to replace the head gaskets in my 96 disco and just want to know wich gaskets are better the composite type or the metal only type.

I think 3.9s probably all had compsite type. PhilipA has recently done the job using composites (aftermarket I believe).

Agree with above that composites are the go.I looked into this very recently and was told by a rover engine rebuilder that steel can only be used if the heads and block are re-surfaced as they need a perfect surface for a good seal.

If you have a 96 Disco the heads are designed for composite gaskets . If you fitted steel gaskets you would have a higher compression ratio, but the inlet manifold may not fit properly and you may have to shim therocker pedestals to have the correct lifter preload.
