    torque converter

    Hi all.
Just about to install new 3.9 in my 94 Disco with the ZF Auto.Firstly are there any tricks to installing the torque converter properly.I am aware that it needs to be pushed right back onto both sets of splines but am not sure if that is all that is needed.I have only worked with manual transmissions before so please excuse my ignorance here. Also I am wondering if I should fit a new torque converter or not.The trans has done 260,000 kms and I am not sure if the original torque converters can do a lot more miles than that or is it due for replacement. Are there any tests I can do to check the condition of it ?.Any help greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

Just a few tips, make sure the spigot on the TQ fits easily into the hole in the centre of the flywhheel, use a pushbike tube (big rubber band) to hold the TQ from slipping forward/off while moving the Box into position to fit, some extended studs in bellhousing to guide Box into place, good luck, Regards Frank.

precenter the flex plate so that you can get the first bolt into the torque convertor straight off, on some models Ive been known to screw a stud into the TC install the TC into the gearbox, install the box making sure that the stud goes through the flex plate hole then turning the motor installing one bolt at a time, missing the stud, torquing up the rest of them then replacing the stud and then installing and tightening the last bolt.

I've also been known to pre fill the TC with a liter or so of oiland put vasaline on the shaft and seal prior to installing the TC.

I also put the keys to the car on the fill point of the auto.

to check the the TC is all the way in, measure the distance from the face of the flex plate to the face of the ring gear housing, then measure the distance from the face of the TC mounting bolt lugs to the face of the gearbox bell housing. If the 2 numbers arent the same your TC is incorrectly positioned, the flex plate to adaptor plate number is larger but a few MM thats normal, if the number for the bellhousing to the TC lugs is larger the TC is not correctly seated.

Check the spigot on the TQ for wear and also in the hub aligner in the end of the crankshaft. If they are worn, you can get them replaced with a balance and TQ service for about $350.

Thanks everyone for your help.I did manage to get everything on the trans side done today.Quite a job.Firstly I couldn't get the front main trans seal off without having to take off the pump housing. Then the gasket between the pump housing and and the box broke.Had to then buy some 0.4mm gasket paper and a set of hole punches to make a new gasket.Anyway it's all done now and sorted the fitting of the Torque converter. Also thanks for the studs idea,it was on my mind.Fit the engine tomorrow finally ,it sure is a tight squeeze getting to those bellhousing bolts isn't it.
    Cheers
