200 TDI would run on, even though no power to solenoid.
Pulled it and found fine metal swarf under it. Cleaned it and now all OK
Question is where does this stuff come from, is it terminal and can the eroding part be replaced easily?

sounds like what ben says, i have seen this and it turned out to be the hardface on the cam ring had failed, needed a pump overhaul.

Thanks. Not good. I have another pump but it seems that to swap without removing all the front cover and belt etc I have to have special tool LRT 12 o45 to hold the pully or sprocket as they call it in place while changing over. Where can I buy this tool or get the dimensions to turn one up?

I know this is from a 300tdi but should be pretty close? maybe!

hardfacings coming off. you can replace the pump without specialist gear if you take your time and back off all the spring loaded stuff from the cam.
Its a lot quicker and easier to use the timing pins.
from memory inital setup on a 200 is the same as a 300Tdi.

Use a 3/8 bolt and cut the head off it. It works perfectly.
