Was checking the uni's in the front driveshaft the other day and noticed the front transfer case bearing has quite a bit of movement in it. Have been quoted roughly $1000 to strip the transfer and fit new bearings. Does this sound reasonable? Is there anything else that should be replaced or should i just get an exchange transfer? All 4x4 have them for $1950 exchange.
cheers ben
a front output bearing going does not necessarily mean a full rebuild.
it is a common failure and if caught early the rest of the case will be fine.
how much movement is quite a bit? if the seal hasnt gone yet then it sounds like youve caught it early enough

if youre handy with the tools you can change it without too much trouble and youll get change from $50 for the bearing and seal.
righto thanks for the info ssmith, i guess ill have to check what the $1000 is exactly for. If it is a rebuild i might just go for it, to make sure i don;t have to visit this area again. If not then..........might have a go at that bearing myself. Regarding how much movement is in it, i haven't had a dial indicator on it, but you can easily feel the movement by moving the driveshaft by hand.
cheers
They have movement from new, normal for a deep groove single race ball bearing. How much deflection are you measuring from max one direction to max the other?
JC
They always have play, but you can do them in the car, no need to pull out the box.
thanks for the advice everyone, ive got it booked in for a few minor things so ill get them to measure the movement whilst in there and ill go from there. Does anyone know what the max movement is before replacement?
cheers ben
He he - dial gauge - mate we are talking about a s1 disco here - if ya grab it and shake it and it moves and you say out loud - ooh thats effed then it probably is - if it moves any less than that then its probably not!
if its effed have a crack and fixing it yourself - whats the worst that can happen - you get a few months out of it then you can let a workshop have a crack at you. dont be scared mate have a go !
Out interest would the process be the same on D2? I've been having a ticking noise on acceleration and de acceleration so this afternoon went under and found the DC and other joint to be in good condition (they did not rattle) but there is a fair amount of play (8-10mm) in the shaft and what it appears to be a ticking sound......so thinking and hoping it's the bearing? Where to buy such a part?
