    Clunking noise

    G'day guys

    Got a 4speed auto,

When I change from drive to reverse or vice versa a big clunking noise, like metal to metal, occurs. Any ideas what it could be. I'm hoping not the diff.

    Cheers, ezra

Ezra, from your start date you are new to Land Rovers.
The clunk can be caused by a numbe rof things that you will have to inspect.
1 The rear axle ball joint in teh middle may be worn. To test you get a big lever and see if you can move it sideways.
2 the diff can have excessive backlash, but unless the pinion bearing is leaking then it should be OK.
3 The transfer case in a Disco is gear driven and all gear driven transfers will have some degree of backlash. A familaiar noise on a trip is the kachunk, karchunk, karchunk of a Disco/RRC bouncing backwards and forwards in low range on its transfer backlash.

a sum of 1,2 and 3 can add up.

If you think it is excessive have it checked out , but any fix except the ball joint will be expensive, maybe for only a small improvemnet.
    Regards Philip A
